How to Fast According to the Bible: Let’s Get it Right

From the old testaments to the new testaments, the subject of fasting is scattered across the books of the bible. Abraham fasted, Moses did too. Prophets fasted, priests did too. The Israelites fasted, the kings did too. Moving to the New Testament, John the Baptist fasted, Jesus did too. Even when Jesus died, His disciples fasted and prayed. Therefore, fasting is biblical.

Of course, the question is how to fast according to the bible, not whether fasting is biblical or not.

The most common kind of fasting seen in the Old Testament was going without food, and putting on sackcloth (rags). In the New Testament, we hardly heard of sackcloth; but people fasted by going without food. So how do we fast? What is the biblical way to fast?

It must be known that fasting doesn’t necessarily mean going without food, rather it means consecrating and humbling oneself before God.

And you’re likely to have heard of different kinds of fasting such as white-fast, marathon -fast and 6-6 fast. None of these fasting is wrong and none is most appropriate. It all boils down to concentrating and humbling oneself before God.

Because Jesus fasted 40 days and 40 nights, doesn’t make a 40-day-and-40-night fast the most biblical. The singular purpose is to bring the flesh under subjection and allow the spirit-man to gain ascendency.

This Is the Point:

Fasting is all about sacrifice and humbling yourself before God.

If what you want to do, is a food–fast, then, it means you want to sacrifice your food, humble yourself before God, and communicate with him heart-to-heart, towards having a breakthrough.

Other things of pleasure can be sacrificed too. The bottom line is to tell your flesh (desire and appetite), that you have control over it, and that you’re giving your desires up to seek the Lord wholeheartedly, selflessly and without distraction.

For someone who is addicted to coffee or cola, and cannot do without a cup of coffee/ Cola daily, may decide to do away with it for several days, as a sign of putting the flesh (desire and appetite) under control. Converting the value of the coffee/ cola into money to give to the poor, is a worthy fast.

Each time you feel drawn to these things, you remember that you are in a fast, humbling yourself before God, and serving as a source of blessing to others.

We are in an age where people have become addicted to their phones and social media, staying away from these things, and converting the many hours used with gadgets and social medial to talking with God or to render service to the less privileged one way or the other, can be termed fasting, and an acceptable one at that.

Let’s Dig Deeper into Fasting

God particularly mentioned something about fasting, which requires that we look into it. Let’s see what God says about fasting and deduce the right perspective, purpose and power of fasting from this.

“But they also complain, ‘Why do we fast and you don’t look our way? Why do we humble ourselves and you don’t even notice?’

“Well, here’s why: “The bottom line on your ‘fast days’ is profit.  You drive your employees much too hard. You fast, but at the same time you bicker and fight.

You fast, but you swing a mean fist. The kind of fasting you do won’t get your prayers off the ground.

Do you think this is the kind of fast day I’m after: a day to show off humility?

To put on a pious long face and parade around solemnly in black? Do you call that fasting, a fast day that I, God, would like? (Isa. 58:2-4)

From this passage of the Bible, it is obvious that God is far more concerned about the intention behind our fast, and how we conduct ourselves during fast; than the religious acts behind going without food and putting on sackcloth.

Obviously, God is saying, it is not just about going without food and having a feeling of self-righteousness. It is not to feel cool that we are paying prices to get God’s attention. It’s all about the mindset and attitude during fast.

Let’s read that passage further (Verses 6 and 7) to know the kind of fast that gets God’s attention.

“This is the kind of fast day I’m after: to break the chains of injustice, get rid of exploitation in the workplace, free the oppressed, cancel debts.

What I’m interested in seeing you do is: sharing your food with the hungry, inviting the homeless poor into your homes, putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad, being available to your own families.”

Basically, what God is interested to see when we fast is to express love to our loved ones, and also those who are oppressed and less privileged. It is to get rid of being full of our self, and doing away with the cool feeling of self-righteousness. More so, it is to pay attention to others needs.

So, the kind of fasting that gets our prayers answered, quickly, is to seek to be an answered prayer to others who are less privileged.

That goes to say that, how to fast and pray for a breakthrough, is to help others get their breakthrough too.

Let’s take a clue from Jesus’ fasting. The essence of his long 40 days and 40 night fast was not for his purpose; rather, it was to help others who are in captivity and to be anointed for his earthly ministry which was basically to save.

He puts it better here:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised…” Luke.4.18

We can therefore conclude that how to fast and pray for a breakthrough is to be concerned about helping those we can help.

Mind you, this is not to say that fasting, as in going without food, is wrong or ineffective. Also, it is not to say that we shouldn’t pray and fast for our breakthrough. Rather, it is to emphasize that our breakthrough should lead to the breakthrough of others.

When we come to this consciousness in our fasting and prayer for a breakthrough, we get positioned for prayer that produces result fast. The power of prayer and fasting cannot be overemphasized.

Let’s read further to see how the passage we are considering confirms this.

“Do this and the lights will turn on, and your lives will turn around at once. (This is breakthrough guaranteed)

Your righteousness will pave your way. (So much that nothing will be able to hinder you). The God of glory will secure your passage.

Then when you pray, God will answer. You’ll call out for help and I’ll say, ‘Here I am.’ (resulting to praying to get answer without delay). (Mine Emphasis added)

How to Pray for Breakthrough

How to Fast and Pray for A Breakthrough

As we consider how to fast and pray for a breakthrough, having gone through how to fast for breakthrough, let’s see how to pray our way into our next levels.

The devil indeed attempts to hinder God’s people. He wants to make sure that you do not enjoy the goodies in God. He intends to make life frustrating and unbearable. However, because we have the Almighty on our side, we can bring to nought the wiles of the devil against us.

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? (Rom.8.31).

If God is on your side, no one can successfully be against you. Yes, they may come against you in one way or the other, but the Lord shall make them run away in seven ways. Deuteronomy 28.7  puts it this way: “GOD will defeat your enemies who attack you. They’ll come at you on one road and run away on seven roads”.

Steps to Praying for A Breakthrough

  1. First Thing First

While I quickly take you through the steps to praying a breakthrough prayer, I want you to bear in mind that the major requirement to answered prayer is to be one with God. This simply means to be born again and accept the eternal life that Jesus came to offer you when he died on the cross for your sake.

This gives you access to the throne of grace where you can obtain mercy and find help.

If you have not accepted the life of Jesus and would love to, I want you to pray this prayer of salvation.

If you’re already united to God through Christ Jesus, I want to congratulate you and want you to know that you deserve a better life.

  1. Come with an Assurance

Again and again, the Bible made it clear that a double-minded man cannot receive from God.

“…ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him.

But he must ask [for wisdom] in faith, without doubting [God’s willingness to help], for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind.

For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything [at all] from the Lord…” (James 2:5-7 AMP.)

When you come to the place of prayer, praying for a breakthrough, you should pray with a knowing that God, in His love, mercy and kindness would respond to your prayer and ensure your breakthrough.

Do not approach a breakthrough prayer or any kind of prayer with a trial-and-error mindset. Faith is a requirement in prayer and must be exercised to experience desired breakthrough.

Believe that He is able and willing to help bring you into the “promised land”. You should always bear in mind that, The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (James 5:16).

  1. What Do You Want?

“…A blind man was sitting beside the road asking for handouts. When he heard the rustle of the crowd, he asked what was going on. They told him, “Jesus the Nazarene is going by.”

He yelled, “Jesus! Son of David! Mercy, have mercy on me!”

Those ahead of Jesus told the man to shut up, but he only yelled all the louder, “Son of David! Mercy, have mercy on me!”

Jesus stopped and ordered him to be brought over. When he had come near, Jesus asked, “What do you want from me?”

He said, “Master, I want to see again.”

Jesus said, “Go ahead—see again! Your faith has saved and healed you!” The healing was instant: He looked up, seeing—and then followed Jesus, glorifying God. Everyone in the street joined in, shouting praise to God. (Luke 18:35-43 MSG)

One may ask, “Couldn’t Jesus see that he was blind, and obviously want to see?”. Well, that question may not be wrong. However, Jesus’ question could be taken as a clue to God’s attitude to our prayers. Even though He’s an All-knowing God, He still wants us to be specific about our needs and say exactly what we want Him to do.

It is possible to get to the place of prayer with so much worry and negative emotions, that we just kneel there sulking and shedding tears. While this is normal and good to help shed a bit of the burden in our mind, we must remember that praying for a breakthrough requires that we get specific with our desires.

Do not simply say, “God, I need a breakthrough“. That’s too generic and vague. Instead, say,  “God, I need a breakthrough in my business; I want to get to the point where I can make a profit of $5000 every month”. Mention the area(s) where you need a breakthrough, and where applicable, describe the extent of breakthrough you desire to experience.

7 Things to Avoid When Fasting and Praying for A Breakthrough

How to Fast and Pray for A Breakthrough

Whatever kind of fast you have decided to engage in, as much as there is no rigid rule to fasting; there are things to be avoided when fasting and praying for a breakthrough.

When the enemy knows you’ve made the decision to breakthrough, and that you have planned to engage in fasting and prayer, he’ll begin to strategize to ensure that your fasting and prayer is rendered ineffective.

The bible advised us not to be ignorant of the devices of the enemy. These possible devices of the enemy are the things you must look out for, and consciously avoid.

Mind you, these should not just be avoided in the period of your fast alone; rather, they should be avoided as a lifestyle. You should know that if the enemy cannot get you to fall for his trick while you are fasting, he’ll come again when he thinks you are relaxed and careless.

Therefore, you must always Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour. (1 Pet 5:8)

  1. Bitterness, Envy and Strife

Jesus said,

“if you are standing before the altar in the Temple, offering a sacrifice to God, and suddenly remember that a friend has something against you, leave your sacrifice there beside the altar and go and apologize and be reconciled to him, and then come and offer your sacrifice to God”. (Matthew 5:23 & 24 Living Bible)

No one should come to prayer with bitterness and strife. An offended heart cannot concentrate on God. More so, offence in the heart is like an infection that makes the heart unworthy to communicate with a holy God.

  1. Doubt and Disbelief

Doubt and Disbelief are two different things and are different from unbelief. Unbelief is, not believing at all.

Doubt has to do with being double-minded. It is having a maybe-maybe-not mindset. It is not being sure that your prayer will receive divine intervention.

Disbelief is to lose faith along the line. It is to allow your rational thinking to bring you to the point of losing faith in the face of contradictory experiences. This was what happened to Peter, which made him started sinking while he walked on water. He believed initially, but lost his faith, and began to sink.

Either doubt or disbelief should be avoided when fasting and praying for a breakthrough.

  1. Willful Act of Sin

Let’s face it, sin has nothing to do with God. I mean, it doesn’t affect God in any way. The avoiding of sinful acts is so that the devil, our arc enemy would not find a hold to condemn you in the place of prayer. Remember, that the devil is an accuser of brethren. He is always seeking an opportunity to let you know that you do not qualify for God’s blessings and intervention.

Put him away, by exercising self-control and most importantly, relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, to keep you in good conduct.

When Jesus just concluded his 40 days and 40 nights fasting and prayer, the devil came to him presenting temptations. But Jesus was discerning enough to know that “this are wiles of the devil” to keep me away from my ‘breakthrough‘.

  1. Distraction

The essence of fasting is to set yourself apart to fellowship with the Holy Spirit. It is supposed to be a time of deep communication with God; when you can pour your heart to Him and hear what He may have to say to you.

It is therefore apparent that you should avoid the distraction of any form, and concentrate maximally on God, so you can get the best out of your fasting and prayer.

Matthew 6:6 records the advice given by Jesus concerning avoiding distraction in prayer.

“But when you pray, go into your most private room, close the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you.”

  1. Selfishness

One of the first point made in this post is the fact that your essence of fasting must not be solely on you and you alone. Even when you have dedicated time to fast and pray, it must cumulate to being a blessing to others. The essence of God’s blessings on us is that we should become a blessing too.

When fasting and praying for a breakthrough, we should bear in mind that our breakthrough should mean a form of breakthrough to others too.

James 4:3 revealed that “You ask [God for something] and do not receive it, because you ask with wrong motives [out of selfishness or with an unrighteous agenda], so that [when you get what you want] you may spend it on your [hedonistic] desires. (Amplified Version)

Therefore, selfishness can render fasting and prayer ineffective.

  1. Prayerlessness

If you’re observing fasting and prayer, it should truly be fasting and prayer.  To engage in rigorous fast without scheduling adequate time for passionate prayer is to observe religious exercise that carries no power.

The emphasis here should not be on fasting, but rather on prayer. Fasting is to help you pray passionately and with concentration. I would prefer to call it prayer with fasting, than ‘fasting and prayer’. I think that would put the emphasis on where it belongs.

  1. Negative Imagination

The Bible says in Ephesians 3:20 that God …is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,…”. That goes to say, that God doesn’t only listen to our words, he also responds to our imaginations.

You should not be praying for a breakthrough, while your mind is occupied with negative thoughts and imaginations. That is counterproductive.

This does not mean that the devil cannot trigger negative thought of defeat and bondage in us, but we must learn not to dwell on such thoughts, and replace them with the promises of God in the Bible, for you concerning that matter.

While fasting and praying for a breakthrough, and also at every other time too, do all you can, to get rid of negative thoughts that may spring up in your heart.
